For private label and retailer brands, packaging is more than just protection—it plays a crucial role in compliance, sustainability, and customer experience. It must meet regulations, ensure efficiency, and communicate brand value while reinforcing consumer trust. At Ontex, we help our customers design packaging that balances functionality and sustainability, ensuring it meets industry standards and strengthens their market position.

Safety and transparency

Absorbent hygiene products, like the baby diapers, feminine hygiene products, and adult incontinence we produce, come into direct contact with sensitive skin. That’s why they are classified as contact-sensitive under the new Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation. Clear and accurate packaging is essential to inform consumers about ingredients and product performance while ensuring compliance with evolving regulations. At Ontex, we follow these standards closely and fully align with the Green Claims Directive, which from 2025 requires all sustainability claims on packaging to be accurate and verifiable.

Sustainable packaging

To guarantee product protection and usability, most packaging is made of plastic, which offers better hygiene and durability than paper bags that can tear during transport and create waste. In line with the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation, Ontex is actively reducing virgin plastic, newly produced plastic that hasn’t been recycled before. Since 2000, we have cut plastic bag thickness by 20-30% and now offer over 50% recycled content in bags and 100% recycled cardboard in cartons. Additionally, all our packaging is fully recyclable when properly sorted and disposed of.

Here for you!

“At first, people see packaging as simple product wrapping, but in reality, it’s much more than that. It shapes brand reputation, identity, and recognition,” says Rafael Prota Barroeta, VP Packaging & Commercial Process Transformation.

“By prioritizing both safety and sustainability, we strengthen trust with our customers and consumers alike. At Ontex, we bring expertise in packaging design and functionality, offering our customers tailored support. This ability to advise and innovate is a key differentiator, reinforcing our commitment to being ‘Here for you.’”

Packaging as a consumer decision driver

Packaging also plays a crucial role in shaping consumer choices and has become a key element of marketing strategies. Research reveals that 72% of American consumers say packaging design directly influences their purchasing decisions, meaning that the visual appeal and functionality of packaging can significantly impact whether a product is selected off the shelf. Furthermore, 84% of European consumers actively seek out recycling instructions, indicating that there is a growing awareness and desire for responsible packaging among shoppers. Finally, 77% of consumers express a willingness to pay more for products with sustainable packaging, highlighting the increasing importance of environmental considerations in purchasing decisions.

Together, these findings emphasize that packaging is not only a practical necessity but also a powerful factor in driving consumer loyalty and preference.

Promoting safe sleep through packaging

A new law in France aims to reduce the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), also known as cot death. It requires baby care product manufacturers to only promote safe sleeping environments on packaging; showing babies sleeping on their backs, in their own cot, without clutter or toys around them.

In addition, packaging must now include safety instructions to raise awareness and inform parents about the importance of safe sleep practices.

At Ontex, we have proactively chosen to recommend these guidelines to all our customers worldwide. We also ensure that all images on our own official channels comply with this regulation. By including these guidelines specifically in the Ontex brand book, we want to actively educate our employees about these standards, ensuring consistency and reinforcing our commitment to infant safety.
